With the objective to advocate the rights of the LGBT community, this year’s Alphawood grant award presents this exhibit. In the show, Alphawood identifies the diverse work with labeled icons defining the artist’s point of reference. They include, Body, Activism, Camouflage, and Spirit.

Originally a bank, the exhibition space lends itself to many aspects of isolation, entrapment, and loneliness conveyed in the work. Below is only a fraction of the art.

    • Undeniable Evidence

Posted at 12:53 am by jan, on December 9, 2016

When I consider what Fine Art is, I think about work with multiple layers of meaning. I think about art like the installations of artist, Doris Salcedo. A large portion of her work is in response to what she witnessed in her Colombia homeland. Using personal articles of those who were victims of war and merciless brutality, her art is documentation and undeniable evidence of crimes against innocence.

Although work like this is painful to observe, it is absolutely necessary in order to expose crimes and criminals, give voice to victims, and advocate ethical principles.

This week Betty and I rode to the Museum of Contemporary Art to experience the 2006 installation of artist, Alfredo Jaar.

      220 E Chicago Ave

In the group exhibition, Witness, The Sound of Silence is roughly an 8 minute immersion into an observation, a story, a crime. img_8199When entering the gallery you are met with an enclosed room-sized cube where a singular, florescent lit side confronts you. You are then guided to the opposite end, invited to sit on a bench and wait for a green light invitational signal.img_8206

Upon entering the dark space, you sit, read minimal relevant text and witness.

      img_8210

The genesis of the piece is a singular photo. One that tells the story of millions. The same image is part of what destroyed the artist who took it. And in that very same image is the result of lost humanness.

This piece will exhibit until February 12th and is a part of the permanent collection at the MCA.

Now through February 25th enjoy Sydney University’s Tin Sheds Gallery’s traveling installation project, City of Ideas: Architects’ Voices and Visions. After curator Vladimir Belogolovsky gathered and transcribed leading international architects ideas and objectives he then extended the collaboration to local artists and architects for their response to the work and to the evolution of architectural design.

Now through April 30th exhibition, Tattoo explores many aspects of the practice of tattooing including cultural influence, the tools used, the history of tattooing, and live tattoo demonstrations.

I visited this show over a week ago and what continues to come to mind is the characteristic of tattooing that identifies a person regardless of whether it is received by choice or not. These characteristics then exemplify a dichotomy of extreme intention, representation, and meaning.

    • When Home is Where the Creativity Is

Posted at 6:25 pm by jan, on October 25, 2016

Greetings All! This blog entry is inspired by my love of cooking shows and competitions on the Food Network. A favorite, hands down, is Chopped where competitors create a dish within a specific time from a mystery baskets of ingredients. Dishes are judged on creativity, taste, and presentation.

So I was delighted when my best friend agreed to shop for mystery ingredients for three courses and, when presented, timed me while I got my COOK-ON!

      Thanks mom!

      Thanks mom!

Now that was fun! However, for the record, after eating and critiquing my work we were three shades of queasy…HA and EW! Still we’re up for doing this again and loved the creativity and game of it. Thanks again mom!

So Betty and I are off, hitting the streets for our next adventure and inviting you to do the same! Look for art and artistic expression everywhere and then please, SHOW ME WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW!!!!

Posted at 6:13 pm by jan, on August 31, 2016

On our journeys of late, Betty and I are sensing the transition from summer to fall. An early morning ride to Albany Park was filled with cool temperatures, earthy smells, and discoveries along the way.

      North Shore Channel Trail

The 6.5-mile riverside trail is so lovely and with sounds like tree frogs and children playing you feel like you’re far away from the hustle of the city.

      And then there was this…

Awesome discoveries and even better, there’s more to come on the North Shore Channel Trail. Research tells me that if we stay on it through Lincolnwood we’ll meet up with the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park and last the Ladd Arboretum in Evanston. How’s that for my next adventure with Betty?!

Alright fellow explorers! We are off and inviting you to come along. Discover art and artistic expression everywhere, post it here and SHOW ME WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW!!
