challenging preconceived notions, Betty and I head over to the Art Institute. For the past few visits I have passed up the opportunity to view the Ethel Stein Master Weaver exhibition. It’s closing date was November 9 but lucky for me it was still up.
Sadly this is the only image I can share with you because the work doesn’t belong to the Art Institute however, check out the film they commissioned, vimeo.com/97457445.
What I didn’t know: That I would be blown away by the incredibly technical and complex work. Although I couldn’t touch any of the pieces they appeared soft and inviting. Most are geometric and organic in shape encouraging the viewer to get lost in meditative thought. The film is enchanting documenting her processes when dyeing, spinning, and weaving. Perhaps my favorite clip is a hand written pattern of numbers taped to her loom insuring precision as she weaves.
Alright then! Betty and I are off but first extending an invitation to ALL! Get out there and SHOW ME WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW!!!
